Japandi Interior Design blends Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian rustic warmth, creating calm, functional, and uncluttered sanctuaries. This approach isn’t about copying trends—it’s about understanding the philosophy and lifestyle behind them.
One of our condominium projects at Parc Esta perfectly embodies this. A bachelor wanted a studio apartment that felt zen yet reflected his openness to design. We mixed textures, layered materials, and used carefully chosen wallpaper and finishes, keeping the space airy, functional, and serene.
Japandi Interior Design focuses on harmony, functionality, and simplicity. It balances clean, minimal lines with warmth, natural textures, and thoughtful details that bring life to every corner. In our Parc Esta project, this meant hiding storage under a platform to maximize space while layering textures and finishes for visual interest.
As part of our design process, we always dig into the inspiration and origins of a style rather than just copying its aesthetics. Japanese wabi-sabi celebrates imperfection, natural beauty, and longevity, while Scandinavian hygge brings coziness, comfort, and simplicity. Understanding these principles gives each project its own life—our Japandi homes, including Parc Esta, end up uniquely tailored to their inhabitants.
Color Palette: Muted neutrals like oatmeal, beige, stone grey, and off-white, accented with darker tones for depth.
Materials: Natural, sustainable materials such as light woods (oak, maple), bamboo, rattan, linen, and paper.
Furniture: Low-profile, functional pieces combining straight Scandinavian lines with subtle Japanese curves.
Lighting: Maximize natural light with simple, sculptural fixtures; soft, layered lighting creates calm and warmth.
Decor: Minimal and intentional—think handcrafted ceramics, a single branch, live plants, and uncluttered surfaces.
For our project at Parc Esta, Nuvolette from Cole & Son wallpaper, sourced from Enchanted Home added subtle visual interest—our go-to for soft finishes, thanks to founder Maxine’s passion for elegant wall treatments.
The Japandi Studio or Apartment: Use multifunctional furniture, hidden storage, and natural textures. Layer soft textiles and finishes for subtle depth. The Parc Esta apartment demonstrates this: storage is cleverly concealed under a raised platform, making the space feel spacious and uncluttered.
Adding Personality: Incorporate personal touches—art, unique materials, or design quirks—to make the space feel alive without overwhelming the calm foundation.
The Japandi Living Room: Think low-slung sofa, simple wood coffee table, and textured rug—a cozy corner that feels grounded yet open. For inspiration, check out Journey East for reclaimed teak and vintage Asian furniture. Their pieces, like the Tribecca Leather Sofa, bring character while blending seamlessly into Japandi interiors.
The Japandi Bedroom: Natural linen bedding, a platform bed, and paper lanterns keep the space calm and balanced. Soul & Tables offers solid wood furniture that’s eco-friendly, durable, and simple—perfect for sustainable Japandi living.
Lifestyle Considerations: Japandi isn’t just about looks—it’s about how the space supports your life. At Parc Esta, we created a corner for the client to overlook the reservoir, offering a moment of calm during work. Interior design is about marrying your lifestyle, the home, and the space around it.
